In February 2024, the LWV of Greater Pittsburgh adopted a Gun Safety Position that is broader in scope than the current LWV Gun Position.

The LWVPGH specifically rejects the assertion that the Second Amendment prohibits the regulation of firearms and that gun violence should be addressed primarily as a law-enforcement problem or by "hardening" schools, government buildings, public transportation infrastructure and public venues.

Rather, the LWVPGH endorses a public health approach to reducing gun violence. We support using research-based strategies that measure success in terms of public health and safety.We reject the idea that more armed citizens will increase public safety.

LWVPGH supports certain restrictions on gun ownership and usage that will serve to support safe communities: the freedom of citizens to assemble and move about freely, and to enjoy their community's lifestyle without fear of being shot, and to send the community's children to schools and colleges without fear of their becoming a victim of gun violence.

This approach will require all citizens to adjust their personal behavior to contribute toward the Grand Prize: the Common Good.
